Sweet Child of Mine - An original song by Jenny Sinclair
The Story Behind "Sweet Child of Mine"
Around 25 years ago, I was invited to perform at a Special Olympics dinner event. Because of the nature of the evening, I casually mentioned that I would write a song especially for the occasion. The words came to me very quickly and naturally. Within about 30 minutes, most of the song had been written, and one line kept repeating in my mind — “Sweet Child of Mine.” I knew straight away that those words were meant to be at the heart of the song. I then worked with my song writing partner, John Springate, who helped bring the music to life. As time was short, we created a simple piano version, and I performed the song at the event.
Afterwards, many people came up to me in tears, saying how deeply the song had touched them. The event organiser later told me that so many people had asked for a copy of the song that they wondered if I would consider recording it properly — and so I did.
My son is the sunshine of our family and light of our life— a happy, affectionate young man who fills our lives with laughter, warmth and joy. ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ was written as a celebration of his life, his beautiful spirit and the unconditional love between a mother and her child. Although the song was born from happiness and love, I never imagined that something so personal would one day touch the hearts of people dealing with grief and loss. I think that’s because music written from genuine love has a way of reaching people when they need it most.
Over the years, I began hearing stories from listeners that really touched me deeply.
One funeral director once told me, “You don’t realise the power of your song.”
He shared the story of a six-week-old baby who had sadly passed away. The grieving parents were struggling to process their loss, and he decided to play “Sweet Child of Mine” for them.
He later told me that the song helped the parents begin their grieving process, and they asked for it to be played at their baby’s funeral.
He said that during the service there was not a dry eye in the room, and afterwards many people asked who was singing and what the song was called.
Hearing this face to face really overwhelmed me. I was so emotional for the family and the loss of their beautiful baby, but I was also deeply moved that the song could help bring even a small amount of comfort during such a difficult time.
What also really touched me was knowing that the entire reason this song existed was because of my beautiful son Mickey. Although he has complex special needs, cerebral palsy, and is non-verbal, he became the inspiration behind something that has gone on to help and comfort many people, which is an incredible gift, and to me he will always be the real star behind this song, because without him the song would never have been written. My son is the most beautiful soul and he continues to inspire me every day.
Another mother once shared that after losing a baby many years earlier and never truly being able to grieve, hearing this song more than 20 years later finally helped her to begin healing. I was told she played the song over and over and that the song not only helped her to start to grieve, but also celebrate and acknowledge the sweet child that she had had.
Over the years, “Sweet Child of Mine” has also been played at other children’s funerals, where families said it helped them feel close to their child.
Around 20 years ago, a funeral organisation even requested 30 copies of the song because they felt it could help grieving parents.
A special-needs school also asked for copies to share with families they supported.
Other listeners have said that after hearing the song, it helped them to appreciate their own children and to feel closer to them.
Another listener heard the song and sent it to their child and said "this what you mean to me".
The song has also helped raise money for the charity Cerebral Palsy Care (Kent), where Mickey attended when he was 11 months old.
Over time, these experiences completely changed the way I saw the song.
What began as something deeply personal slowly became something much bigger than music alone. I realised that this song had become a source of comfort and was a healing song for many people.
Now, many years later, I felt strongly that I should finally release the song properly into the world while we are all still here.
“Sweet Child of Mine” (2026 Version) was released worldwide across all major music platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube.
More than anything, I wanted to leave behind a legacy from both myself and my son — something that may continue bringing comfort and healing to others long into the future.
Over time, I also came to realise that the story behind the song was also very important because it connected with people on a deep emotional level.
This newly released recording has been created in a warm and heartfelt style inspired by timeless music that gently speaks to the heart.
If this song helps even one person feel more comforted, then sharing it is so worth while.

Jenny's Message..
I wrote the song "Sweet Child of Mine" about my son Mickey who has cerebral palsy. Through this song, I wanted to express that although he has special needs, to me he is absolutely perfect. At it's heart, the song is simply about a mother's unconditional love for her child. Mickey is a special soul and a great teacher to me. I feel very lucky to have him as my son. - Jenny Sinclair
Mike Mickey's dad, is also an incredibly devoted father, and we would not have gotten through everything without each other. Our son is an incredibly brave soul, He goes through such a lot, and he will always be our hero. |

As well as being a singer/songwriter, I currently thoroughly enjoy performing in care homes, nursing homes & day centres which always warms my heart. I have such fun with all the residents, getting to know them and seeing them often, they become like family to me.
